What: A labyrinth is not a maze but a well-defined circular path that leads you into the center and back out again. Labyrinths are an ancient tradition used for spiritual growth, centering and discernment. There are many different labyrinth designs found throughout the world. One of the most famous is in the floor of the cathedral in Chartres, France. In 2001, the Westminster congregation installed a Hopi-styled, 7-circuit, ceramic-tiled labyrinth in the sanctuary floor.

When: The Westminster labyrinth is open for walking on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of every month between 7 - 9 p.m. As use continues to grow, other times will be made available. You may always call to make special arrangements.

Who: Usually 15 - 20 people stop in to walk the labyrinth. Most live in the Southwest neighborhood. A few belong to the congregation. Others found out through a local yoga class. Others through Jazz Night. Whoever you are and wherever you come from, you are warmly welcomed by Co-Pastor Ruth Hamilton and other walkers.

Why: Labyrinth walks quiet the mind and open the heart. They are sometimes referred to as body prayer or walking meditation. In many ways, the labyrinth is a call to action, a transforming spiritual tool for people. It can aid healing, help in releasing grief, help guide through troubled times, aid in decision making, illuminate our purpose in life, and act as a tool of celebration and thanks. It’s many things for many people. It is important to recognize it as a spiritual practice, not a magical tool. Its work is our commitment to enter into the sacred spiritual walk, not merely once, but to use it as part of an ongoing spiritual practice.

Other: Books on labyrinths and other spiritual practices are available to borrow. There is no charge for Wednesday Labyrinth Walks. Any donations are used to resupply candles or to purchase other books or meditation music. Your ideas and suggestions are always welcome.
